Water heaters in Fresno and Clovis

No hot water, not enough of it, or water where water should not be. Repair is worth doing where repair is honest, and replacement gets sized to the house rather than to whatever is on the shelf.

“Top notch honest company. Had a water heater issue. They fixed my issue quickly and professionally. Would recommend!”

Water heater repair

No hot water, a cold shower in the rotation, water pooling at the base, or a pilot that will not stay lit.

Inside an open unit, tool in hand.
What you might be seeing
  • No hot water at all, or hot water that runs out partway through a shower
  • Water pooling at the base of the tank
  • A pilot that will not stay lit, or an igniter that clicks without lighting
  • Rumbling, popping, or banging from the tank as it heats
  • Hot water that smells or tastes metallic
What the work involves

Repair starts at the fixture and works back: gas and electric, tank and tankless. So we look at the ignition and the flame sensor, the gas control valve, the elements, the thermostats, the dip tube, the anode rod, and the relief valve. Some of those are parts that wear out. Others are symptoms of a tank failing from the inside. That difference decides whether a repair is money well spent or money spent twice.

Water heater replacement

Gas and electric tanks, replaced and sized to the house rather than to the shelf.

Setting a wall-hung unit.
What you might be seeing
  • The tank itself is leaking from the shell, not from a fitting
  • It has already been repaired once or twice in recent years
  • It is running out of hot water because it was always undersized for the household
  • A quoted repair is a large fraction of what a replacement costs
What the work involves

Most replacements succeed or fail on two things: the sizing and what gets re-used. Sizing comes from the household's real demand, not from the capacity of the old tank. How many bathrooms run at once? Is there a big tub? How many people shower back to back? Then the details: gas or electric, the flue and venting, the pan and where it discharges, the expansion tank, the shutoff valves, the strapping. In California a replacement normally involves a permit and an inspection. Ask who is pulling it, and whether it is in the quote.

Tankless water heaters

Install, descale, and service for households that keep running the tank dry.

What you might be seeing
  • The household keeps running a tank dry
  • There is no room for a tank, or a tank in the way
  • An existing tankless unit is overdue for descaling or has started throwing codes
  • Hot water takes a long time to arrive, or arrives in cold sandwiches
What the work involves

Tankless is a different installation, not a bigger version of the same one. It needs enough gas capacity to fire the burner, a vent that meets the manufacturer's clearance, and on condensing units a drain for the condensate. On hard water the heat exchanger scales up, so descaling on a schedule is what decides how long the unit lasts. Where a tankless unit replaces a tank, the gas line, the venting and sometimes the electrical supply all get looked at before anyone promises it fits.

Telling the lookalikes apart.

Most of the money in this trade is decided by which of two similar problems you actually have. These are the distinctions worth understanding before you call anyone.

No hot water, or not enough hot water

These are different faults and different bills. No hot water at all usually points at ignition, a tripped limit, or a breaker. Hot water that starts fine and then runs out points somewhere else: a dip tube, a failed lower element, sediment in the bottom of the tank, or a tank that was undersized from the start. A plumber who asks which of the two you have is narrowing the job before they arrive.

Leaking from a fitting, or leaking from the tank

A fitting, a drain valve or the relief valve can be re-made or replaced. A tank leaking from its own shell has failed as a pressure vessel, and no repair fixes that. This is the single most useful distinction on this page. It decides whether you are buying a part or a water heater.

Repair it, or replace it

The honest test is not the age of the tank. It is what is failing, and what it costs to fix. A cheap part on a tank with life left is a repair. An expensive repair on a tank near the end is a payment on a replacement you will make anyway. Most people would rather make it once, on purpose, than twice, in an emergency.

Tank or tankless for this house

Tankless is not automatically the upgrade. It rewards houses with the gas capacity, the venting path and the maintenance habit. It punishes houses without them. For a household that cannot fit a tank, or routinely runs one dry, it is the right answer. For a household that wants the simplest possible replacement, a properly sized tank is often the better buy.

Questions worth asking any plumber.

Including this one. A straight answer to these is the difference between a quote and a guess.

  • Ask how the replacement was sized: by the number of bathrooms, or by the household's peak demand?
  • If a replacement is quoted, ask whether the permit and the inspection are included.
  • Ask what is new and what is re-used: the expansion tank, the pan, the vent, the shutoffs, the strapping.
  • On an older tank, ask what the inside looks like. Sediment and corrosion are the honest evidence about remaining life.
  • Ask to see the failed part, or a photograph of it, before the old unit leaves the property.

What actually happens when you call.

  1. 01

    You call or text

Tell us what it is doing, and what it stopped doing. A photo of the tank label or the leak helps more than a paragraph.

  2. 02

We ask the questions that narrow it down

The point is showing up with the right part on the truck, not showing up twice.

  3. 03

    The work gets done

Repairs, replacements, and installs, carried out by the people who quoted it.

  4. 04

    Questions after the fact

Same number, same people. If something needs looking at again, you know who to call.

Water heaters: the questions that come up.

How long should a water heater last?

A tank water heater commonly lasts eight to twelve years. A tankless unit lasts considerably longer when it is descaled on schedule. What matters is the water chemistry, how hard the tank works, and whether the anode rod was ever replaced. That rod sacrifices itself so the steel does not corrode.

Is it worth repairing a leaking water heater?

Not if the tank itself is leaking. A leak from the tank body means the steel has failed, and no repair brings it back. A leak from a fitting, the drain valve, or the temperature and pressure relief valve is a repair. Those are usually straightforward.

Why does my hot water smell like rotten eggs?

Usually a reaction between the anode rod inside the tank and sulfate in the water supply. That produces hydrogen sulfide, which is the rotten-egg smell. The fix is normally a change of anode material rather than a new water heater. It is worth testing before assuming the tank is the problem.

Can a tank be replaced with a tankless unit in the same spot?

Sometimes. A tankless unit needs adequate gas capacity, a vent that meets its clearances, and on condensing models a condensate drain. Where those are missing, converting means work beyond swapping the appliance. That is why it should be looked at before the unit is ordered, not after.

Does a tankless water heater need maintenance?

Yes. Descaling, on a schedule driven by how hard the water is. Scale insulates the heat exchanger. The unit then works harder, throws error codes, and eventually has a shorter life. Of everything on this page, it is the one item that most separates a tankless unit that lasts from one that does not.

My water heater is leaking right now. What should I do?

Shut the water off at the cold inlet valve above the tank first, and if that does not stop it, at the main shutoff where the supply enters the house. If the tank itself is leaking from the shell, the unit has failed and the priority is stopping water rather than saving it. Then call (559) 758-6237: water running where it should not is the one thing worth a call rather than a message.

Is a replacement quote free, and is a repair visit charged?

A quote for a replacement is free. A service call is different: when the visit is troubleshooting, and the fault has to be found before it can be quoted, that visit carries a charge. Call and we will tell you which of the two your job is.

What warranty comes with a new water heater?

Manufacturer warranties vary by product, so the coverage on a tank or tankless unit comes from its maker and differs between models. We do not advertise a blanket parts-and-labor warranty. Ask when you call and the answer will be specific to the unit being quoted.
